did you check the lens of your phone, after taking the photo, as it could of been a smudge

I would say that's smudge or simply sun/light reflection...

I would first look at other photos taken during that same time period. Are there distortions such as this one in those as well? If not, it is a possibility.
It's not where they died or even where they lived. It's much simpler than that. They simply stay near what they loved. That's what keeps them here.
