My team and I are currently looking for an EMF meter to purchase. We've narrowed it down between the K-2 and the Mel. What would you suggest we get from those options? Anybody have something ELSE instead of those two models?

Input greatly appreciated
Thanks!

While I would suggest "both" because both have their weaknesses and strengths, if you are locked into one or the other here is what you need to look at.

The K2 is very sensitive. That is why it is so popular. It is often used as a communication tool because any low level fluctuation in EM will trigger it. Unfortunately this sensitivity also makes it light up just as brightly for AC as well as natural EM fields and yes...small AC spikes are common anywhere electicity is near. It also picks up RF interference so it is vulerable to cell phones, radios, wifi networks etc.

The Mel is a lot better meter as it is filtered from AC and RF interference (but it can still sometimes pick up strong fields in these ranges). It is not nearly as sensitive or responsive as the K2 though so small, quick fluctuations in EM will go unnoticed. As a plus, all the models I have seen come with a thermometer so that does cut down on one more tool to pack around with you.

If I had to have one or the other I would pick the MEL if for no other reason fewer people think it is a piece of crap.

I hear talk about the K2 and the MEL. And I don't see the draw on either of those. I've read the specifications on both 20-20khz, and the sensitivity level. Both are calibrated at 60hz which is honestly the worst possible frequency to calibrate at if you're looking for spirit manifestations. 60hz is the frequency of the US power sources, so you'll get ambient 60hz almost anywhere.

Both MEL and K2 have just a 5 position LED readout which does not give you a true indicator of the level of signal. I don't use EMF meters as a true source of evidence more as a sort of dowsing rod to give me a clue that we're in the right place.

I personally use the Ghost Meter, it has a good old fashioned analog meter on it so you can see subtle fluctuations in the level. Same frequency range as the others, and best of all its CHEAP! CHEAP is a great price where I'm concerned. Specially for a empirical piece of equipment. I got 4 of them, and I got them from Amazon. Here is the LINK.

What I do tend to use more than anything is a little device I put together that lets you actually record the EMF signals. That way you can hear if they're just 60 cycle hum bleeding through from nearby power sources, some mechanical EMF noise, something from a digital source, or a real unexplained source.

Instructions for making one of those can be found in a forum post HERE.

I have NEVER seen an actual MEL meter with anything but a digital readout. The MEL (don't go by eBay where people slide that brand name into their descriptions to show up on searches) is considered a "top of the line" meter and is one of the few being designed and updated for what we do.

I DO agree with you about their use though. If I get a hit that I can't dismiss (i.e. next to an appliance) I will start an EVP session or move a camera. I rarely do more than note the reading although I admit I have posted one apparent communication session via the K2 on my site.

I find the Ghost Meter highly annoying. That beeping noise drives me nuts and I am too lazy to disconnect the speaker. Plus, while I've not noticed it responding to RF like the K2, it does pick up on AC fields as it was originally designed (as the Cel Sensor) to test for leaks from microwave ovens and to my knowledge the internals where never filtered or upgraded.

By the way...being an equipment junkie...I own all three (plus 3 more if you want to discuss others...lol)

If you have the Ghost meter, look to the right side of it. There is a volume control to disable the speaker. I always leave ours turned off, because as you said the noise is annoying especially while doing EVP sessions.

As for the MEL, you talking about the MEL-8704? Yes, that one does have a digital readout, but is also well over $100. Way more than I wish to spend on an EMF meter.

By the way, I would also add that anyone who has a Android (or probably iPhone) can easily use it as an EMF meter as well. There's many great free apps out there for those units. Just make sure to Enable airplane mode or you'll simply be reading your own EMF levels.

We use various EMF Meters on our team. We have K2, MEL, Gauss and other generic ones.

Any meter other than a MEL was developed for use in the electrical trade, the MEL however was developed by a guy wanting to comunicate with his dead daughter. It is named after her (Melanie) and also the year she was born (MEL87)

Any meter I have used is subject to influence from electrical items and esp mobile phones ... make sure what ever you use you have your phones OFF and not just on silent as if you get a Tweet, Email, Text of any push notification or call it will set the meter off.

In the UK the MEL is the one that is least likely to pick up on electrical items such as fire / intruder alarms and fuse boxes.

If i were buying one now i'd go for a MEL, you can get one that also has the same style K2 lights on it, they do cost more though.

The thing I also like about the MEL is the fact it does ambient temperature to.

Hope that helps.

Yes on the 8704 series (about 10 models?). Whenever someone says MEL those are the only ones I have seen under that brand name. They are expensive but because they are considered top end and less likely to pick up unwanted fields people in general tend to put more faith in their readings. Personally I like my TriField so that I can establish what type of field I am dealing with when I find one (just wish it was more pocket friendly).

I will have to look at the Ghost Meter. I just carry it in the kit as a spare for when someone in a group wants one. Maybe I overlooked it.

But I just can't bring myself to trust my phone for anything but texting and calls...lol. I am sure the software works but I just don't know how well tuned the sensors are since I doubt if anyone had that in mind when they made the phones.

I Agree The Mel Meter Is The Best Choice. It Not Only Gives The Temperature readings,It Has A flash Light, and Some Models That Have The Antenna To Radiate Its Own Magnetic Fields...If Only It Had An
EVP Recorder As Well.

Awesome, thanks a bunch for all the advice and information! It's very appreciated. It looks like we'll be getting a Ghost Meter for our next investigation. Then we will be buying other meters as money allows. Thanks again!
