This site has always been a World of its Own. First, as a winter camping ground for Chief Sanquil (Tranquil), and then as a prosperous gold mining area. In 1857 the British Columbia gold rush was launched as gold was found in the Tranquille River, eventually yielding 2,932 ounces of gold. The Fortune and Cooney families were attracted to the area because of the economic opportunity to supply gold miners with supplies. Their ranches produced cattle, garden produce, prize-winning orchards, hay and flour for local consumption. It was definitely in a World of its Own during the TB Sanatorium days between 1909 and 1958 when Sanitoriums were built in isolated areas because of local residents fear of contamination from patients living at the Sanitorium. Due to economic reasons but also for necessity a farm was developed at Tranquille which produced all garden supplies, hay, milk, eggs, beef, and pork for local residents. This continued when Tranquille became a training school and residence for the mentally challenged. In 2000 the site was purchased from the government of British Columbia and Tranquille started its journey towards its destiny as an agrarian resort community - Tranquille on the Lake.

Haunted Activity:

The hospital is divided into 4 wings Y, A, B, C Wings. The hauntings concern B wing which now has been unused for over 10 years but still contains old operating theaters and still seems of the sick patients that have stayed there. The vacant 8th floor was once the pediatrics wing and the sound of crying children can still be heard. In fact after the pediatrics department was moved the floor was used for Alzheimer patients but had to be closed because so many patients complained of hearing children crying. A mother wanders both the 6th and 8th floors crying for her lost child, when approached she disappears but her cries still echo in the hallways. In the basement an electrician was killed while working and his ghost is still seen in the area where he died.

Many different types of light phenomena have been witnessed including orbs that travel in circles at the main entrance, lights going on and off on their own and figures seen in the windows of the abandoned buildings. Like most hospital complexes the buildings are connected by an underground tunnel system. These tunnels are said to be how the staff moved the bodies in order to not upset the living patients. Disembodied voices and figures have been heard and seen in these tunnels. A nurse is also said to have been murdered by a patient and she still wanders the grounds. Legend also says the site was mysteriously abandoned during one winter.

I firmly believe that places like these hold so much sad energy that I don't see how anyone could live in a place like this, even if it is transformed into condos! Similar stories about Danvers State Hospital in Danvers Massachusetts, it was a state institution and much of it remained skeletal and open to ghost hunters and teenager alike. A very sad, oppressive place. It got torn down and renovated into condos and a few people that I know who live there describe supernatural phenomenon all the time. Not surprised!
